Technical Details
Lead-boron polyethylene (Pb-B-PE) sheet is produced by compression molding of a compound containing HDPE or UHMWPE matrix with boron carbide (B₄C) and lead (Pb) powder additives. Boron-10 (¹⁰B) is highly effective at absorbing thermal neutrons through the (n,α) reaction, while lead attenuates gamma radiation. The polyethylene matrix also moderates fast neutrons by elastic scattering. This combination provides broad-spectrum radiation shielding in a single material. Custom formulations with varying boron (5–30%) and lead (0–40%) content are available to optimize shielding performance for specific radiation environments. The material can be machined to complex shapes for custom shielding assemblies.
