How Cast PU Elastomer Outperforms Rubber in Screening and Wear Applications

The mining and aggregate industry demands materials that can withstand continuous abrasion, impact, and exposure to slurries, oils, and chemicals. Cast polyurethane (PU) elastomer sheets have emerged as the preferred solution for screen panels, conveyor liners, and wear components — offering a combination of properties that neither rubber nor steel can match alone.

Why Polyurethane Outperforms Rubber in Mining

Natural rubber has been used in mining for decades, but cast polyurethane offers several critical advantages:

  • Abrasion resistance: Cast PU typically shows 3–5× lower wear volume than natural rubber in DIN abrasion tests (ISO 4649). In high-velocity slurry environments, this translates directly to longer service intervals.
  • Oil and fuel resistance: Rubber swells and degrades in contact with petroleum products. PU maintains its properties in oily environments, making it suitable for underground mining where hydraulic fluid contamination is common.
  • Load-bearing capacity: Hard grades of PU (Shore A 90–95) can support static loads that would permanently deform rubber, enabling thinner cross-sections and lighter components.
  • Noise reduction: PU screen panels are significantly quieter than steel wire screens, reducing workplace noise levels by 10–15 dB in aggregate plants.

Key Applications in Mining

Vibrating Screen Panels

Polyurethane screen panels for vibrating screens are available in modular bolt-down designs (typically 305×305mm or 610×305mm) or in full-deck panels. The open area can be customized from 20% to 55% depending on the aperture shape (square, slotted, or round). Standard hardness for screen panels is Shore A 70–85, balancing aperture retention with impact resistance.

Conveyor Impact Bars and Skirt Boards

At conveyor transfer points, falling material impacts the belt at high velocity. PU impact bars (Shore A 50–65) absorb this energy while protecting the belt. PU skirt board liners seal the conveyor edge to prevent spillage. Both components typically last 3–5× longer than rubber equivalents in abrasive applications.

Hydrocyclone Liners

Hydrocyclones process high-velocity slurries containing abrasive particles. Cast PU liners (Shore A 90–95) provide excellent wear resistance in the high-velocity zones (apex and vortex finder) while the softer inlet section (Shore A 70–80) absorbs impact. PU hydrocyclone liners typically outlast rubber by 2–3× in fine grinding circuits.

Specifying Polyurethane for Mining Applications

When specifying cast PU for mining applications, provide the following information to your supplier:

  • Application (screen panel, impact bar, hydrocyclone liner, etc.)
  • Particle size and type of material being processed
  • Operating temperature range
  • Presence of oils, chemicals, or process water
  • Required dimensions and tolerances
  • Attachment method (bolt-down, adhesive, or mechanical fastening)
